Tektite Luv

Description

This makes the geek in me very, very happy. Tektites are meteor glass, and drilled tektites for jewelry purposes are just the coolest thing ever. The round beads are fossil agate, and the coils are sterling wire. There are actually matching earrings for this necklace that are essentially the exact same as the drop pendants, we just forgot to take pictures of them. This piece (and the earrings!) is currently for sale.

Beautiful work! Re: Tektites, I wrote my master's thesis on the origin of tektites: The dryness of tektites is unusual because they are clearly not terrestrial in origin. All impact glasses are water drenched if formed on the Earth. Despite what most textbooks say about tektites, the older theory that they originated on the Moon--as volcanic glass--and remelted as they entered the Earth's atmosphere is more likely. A portion of Apollo sample 12013, a jumbled breccia rock that probably originated in the Moon's highlands, almost totally matches the geochemistry of certain Australasian tektites. The parent rock of tektites found on Earth is on the Moon. Using complex computer modeling, NASA researcher Dean Chapman was able to trace the strewn field of the Australasian tektites back to the lunar crater Tycho. Thus, tektites are the most abundant type of Moon rock but found right here on Earth!
